Read + Ride with MTD

April 1, 2026, Champaign-Urbana, IL – The Urbana Free Library and Champaign Public Library invite the community to “Read + Ride with MTD” during National Library Week, April 19-25, 2026. Library events are free and open to everyone. During National Library Week, anyone can ride MTD for free by showing their Champaign Public Library or Urbana Free Library card.

Individuals can sign up for a card at The Urbana Free Library or Champaign Public Library, and plan trips at mtd.org. Promotion is available on all routes throughout the week. “Read + Ride with MTD” is presented in partnership with Champaign–Urbana Mass Transit District, Champaign Public Library, and The Urbana Free Library.

National Library Week is a time to highlight the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. Community members can show appreciation and support for libraries by signing up for a library card, visiting the library, and sharing “library love” on social media. First observed in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and celebrated by libraries nationwide each April.

Founded in 1874, The Urbana Free Library has been serving the Urbana community for 150 years and is one of the oldest public libraries in Illinois. The Library is led by a Board of Trustees appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council.

Serving as a vital community center welcoming every member of our community, the Champaign Public Library has ranked in the top 5% of public libraries nationwide and earned a star rating from Library Journal for ten years.
