This article "Officials ponder putting hex on UI Halloween" was printed in the October 15, 1989 News-Gazette. In a pumpkin shell, the article states that the celebration of Halloween on campus started about 1975 "with crowds spilling into the streets and challenging police in impromptu drunken revelry. Police responded with riot gear and dogs."

Ban on UIUC Halloween?, News Gazette, October 15, 1989

The article goes on to say, "The celebrations, in a loose sense of the word, continued with varying intensity until reaching a pitch in 1985 with wide-spread vandalism, fighting, and a randomly thrown beer bottle that struck a student in the head, causing severe injuries and a civil suit still in the court system."

There don't seem to be as many shenanigans on campus on Halloween these days, but be safe out there anyway!
