2014 marks the 10th anniversary of Local History Online, the Champaign County Historical Archives database. Local History Online grew out of a need to replace the Surname Index card file. To this end, the Archives created a Historical and Genealogical Index database in 1994 for the librarians to use. The Index soon encompassed over 435,000 records and over 2.5 million entries from county records, newspaper articles and much more. In the year 2004 CCHA posted the Index on the internet through the Local History Online database. Today, Local History Online is an important part of local history and genealogical research for Champaign County, reaching thousands of researchers from around the globe.
