Robert McCandless, Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board, Amy Bishop

A grant from The Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board provided for the successful re-housing and final finding-aid preparation, of the McCandless Photography Collection (1965-2011). Thanks to the diligent work of Amy Bishop, student at the UIUC Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the full extent (128 boxes) of the collection is now housed in storage containers of appropriate size, strength, and preservation quality. The completion of this project will significantly improve the long-term preservation and access of this collection, which is of great value to our community. The collection consists largely of studio and outdoor portraits of residents of Urbana, Champaign, and nearby towns.  Robert McCandless also photographed groups such as the Urbana Police and Fire Department, Champaign County Bar Association, and members of the First Christian Church, as well other organizations such as Boy Scouts and fraternities and sororities.
