Green Street Bridge, Champaign, 1923

One access point to the west portion of campustown is at the intersection of Green and Neil Streets in Champaign. The current railroad bridge and roadway were constructed in 1899 and upgraded in 1923-1924.

Green Street Bridge, Champaign, 1924

Yesterday's issue of the News-Gazette featured an article concerning the railroad viaduct located at Green and Neil Streets in Champaign. The article includes a photograph of the cracked, unfinished sidewalk and dingy railroad bridge along with an artist's rendering of what the area could look like. The artist's rendering includes handrails along the sidewalk beneath the bridge much like the sidewalk design in 1924 (see above).
