Fan Con 18: Celebrating Comics and Fandom Since 2016

Saturday, July 28 • 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Dress up in your favorite cosplay and prepare for a day full of all the pop culture and geeky things you love.  At Fan Con '18, all fandoms are embraced: from dungeon crawling D&Ders to Death Note-loving otakus to gamers who just want one more hour of Minecraft™ or Super Smash Bros™ to hardcore Supernatural fans who make memes for every situation.  Events for all ages and fandoms.

Cosplay Workshop with CU Community Fab Lab
– Join the Champaign-Urbana Community Fab Lab to make costume accessories using craft foam, felt, fabric, and embellishments. Awesome example costumes on display as well.

11 a.m. - 1 p.m. • Cherry Alley • All Ages
Rock out with WPGU
– WPGU will be on site playing music and handing out giveaways!

HeroClix® Demo with Gopher Mafia Games 
– In HeroClix® you can be the hero you’ve dreamed of or the villain of your nightmares. With thousands of characters to choose from and maps of terrain from all over the universe, who knows where HeroClix® will take you! Gopher Mafia Games will be conducting demos, and each person will be sent home with a complimentary start kit.

The Rise of Black Comics with Stacey Robinson and Damian Duffy
–  From Black Panther to comics inspired by real life, award-winning artists Stacey Robinson (I Am Alfonso Jones: A Black Lives Matter Graphic Novel) and Damian Duffy (Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation) talk diversity in comics.

Designing an Original Character for Comics
- Get creative in this hands-on workshop for all ages with artist Naomi Johnson.

How Run a Successful Kickstarter
– Have an idea, but not sure how to get started?  Listen to Andrew Stengele and Molly Cooper (Houdini’s Poutini and Claim:The Search for the Golden Nugget) and Mike Hinson (End of the Trail) describe the tips and tricks that got their Kickstarters funded.

Trivia Challenge
– Think you know fandom?  Challenge yourself with trivia about movies, games, and TV shows.  How many can you answer?

Speed Drawing Contest
– In a limited time, draw an original character or create your very own one-page comic.  Prizes for the winners!


All Day Drop-ins

– The Pathfinder Society is running short quests for the tabletop RPG Pathfinder®  from the Pathfinder® Beginner Box, and they can seat up to four players per quest.  If you've never played, don't worry; no experience is necessary!  Grab a pregen character and learn as you play!

Board Games
– Play with the Library’s collection of board games or set up your own RPG campaign with the Library's D&D and other role-playing guides.

Photo Op Backdrop
– Cosplayers, are you looking for a spot to show off your costumes and get a great photo?  Strike your best pose and capture your con memory!

– A wizard's spell has put the con in danger!  It’ll take a few good adventurers to break the spell, save the con, and win rewards!
