Interact and Share Through Events at the Library
You know that the Library has a deep collection of materials you can check out, but did you also know that your Library is a place where our community comes together to interact and share experiences at events? Almost 28,000 people have attended over 800 Library events this fiscal year. Programs help us make connections we haven’t made before, between ideas and between people. The Urbana community offers a wealth of opportunities, and the Library plays an important role in offering free access to:
Music: There will be musical events throughout the day on July 17 PLUS All That Jazz: Music-Making Time Capsule on July 20 at 2:00 p.m.
Reading: You know we’ve got that, too: UFL Reads! July 26th 2:00 p.m.
Manga: Don’t miss the 5th Annual Manga Mini-Con for teens on July 24 from 5:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m.
But, wait, there’s more! The Library is out in the community where you are:
Read at the Market the first Saturday of the month from 8:00 a.m. - noon. On July 4, Gussy Up Your Bike or read a book with Library staff at Urbana’s Market at the Square.
Read in the Park: An all ages reading event at Carle Park from 3:00-3:45 p.m. with lemonade and cookies.
The Library’s calendar of events is available here. To sign up for e-notification of library events, including the library’s monthly newsletter, CLICK HERE. Enter your first and last name, use the pull down Event Type menu to select your notification preferences, select Save and you’re done!
If you have ideas for programs you would like the Library to offer in the building or in the community, please let us know.

Saturday, July 4 • 8:00 a.m. - Noon • Urbana’s Market at the Square
This summer you can visit with Library staff at Read at the Market, a monthly event at Urbana’s Market at the Square, located at the corner of Illinois & Vine Streets in downtown Urbana. Enjoy a story on the Magic Reading Carpet, sign up for the Summer Reading Program, get some reading suggestions (we always have suggestions), pick up a free balloon, and learn what summertime fun programs the Library has on the calendar. We’ll have unique activities on the first Saturday of each month for everyone in the family!
On July 4, from 8:00 a.m. to noon, bring your bike to the Market and we’ll have all the supplies to help you “gussy” up your bike for Independence Day. See you at the Market!
Read at the Market is sponsored by The Urbana Free Library in collaboration with the Market at the Square.
The library’s music collection is notable for both its breadth and depth. From the latest chart-topper to historic recordings of Paraguayan flute music, we have it covered. Baroque to avant-garde, opera to rap, ragtime to modern jazz, classic to forgotten; a musical extravaganza awaits! The collection features:
- New arrivals
- On order titles
- Lists of titles from a variety of musical genres
- Vinyl is coming!
- Watch and read suggestions
- Musical resources
