C-U Folk & Roots Festival featuring

The 10th annual C-U Folk & Roots Festival is here! The Library is kicking things off with a free, all ages performance by Sam Payne and Cody Jensen, two of Urbana’s busiest music makers. Together, they form a fun and energetic duo of old time, bluegrass, folk, and calypso! Great for the whole family.

The Library will remain open until 8:00 p.m. for this special C-U Folk & Roots Festival event.

The C-U Folk & Roots Festival is an annual event that promotes the folk arts and contributes to the artistic vitality of central Illinois. The festival takes place at various locations in downtown Urbana, October 18 - 20, 2018.

Archives Bazaar: Discover the History of Champaign County!

Saturday, October 20 • 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
For all ages • MacFarlane-Hood Reading Room (First Floor)

Discover photographs, documents, films, maps, and more artifacts held in the incredible archival and museum collections right here in Champaign County! Enjoy learning about these fascinating resources in a fun, interactive atmosphere. The Bazaar is FREE and features booths where you can chat it up with your local archivists and curators.

Ask professionals how to best preserve your memories, start researching your family history, record an oral history, or ask about the history of Champaign-Urbana, Champaign County, and Chanute Air Force Base. Come see all the diverse resources and history the county has to offer.

Personal Statement: Premiere Film Screening and Discussion

Thursday, October 11 • 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Lewis Auditorium (Ground Floor) • For parents and high school students

The feature-length documentary film Personal Statement follows three seniors at Brooklyn high schools who are determined to get their entire classes accepted into college--even as they work to get accepted into college themselves.  A discussion will follow the film showing.

Dinner will be provided along with college and career resources.

Co-sponsored by Illinois Public Media/WILL TV, University of Illinois TRIO Programs, and The Urbana Free Library.

Zombie Prom VII: Thriller on Elm Street

Friday, October 26 • 5:30 - 8:00 p.m.
For teens • Lewis Auditorium (Ground Floor)

It's prom season at the Library. This one will be just like a regular prom, but everything will be zombified! We'll have punch, snacks, a costume contest, a photo booth, and music. Show up in zombie costume and we will help with your makeup. Start planning your costume now and get ready for some zombie fun!

  • This special, after-hours event starts before the Library closes. Participants must be in the Lewis Auditorium before 6:00 p.m. or enter using the Elm Street ramp after 6:00 p.m. (across from Busey Bank on the north side of the Library).
  • A photo ID is required for entrance (school ID is fine), or with special permission from the Teen Services librarians.
  • The UMS and UHS "good night rule" will be enforced.

Artist of the Corridor Closing Reception for LOOMED BEADWORK by Judie Spencer

Join The Urbana Free Library & Urbana Public Arts Program for a closing reception for the Artist of the Corridor exhibition, LOOMED BEADWORK by Judie Spencer. LOOMED BEADWORK is a collection of beadweaving art exploring pattern, landscapes, and design. Local artist Judie Spencer will offer a brief artist’s talk, Q & A, and show and tell for the whole family, followed by a beading activity. Refreshments will be provided.

Artist of the Corridor is a dual-site exhibition series organized through the City of Urbana Public Arts Program and The Urbana Free Library.

UFLive! presents Samba Soul

Samba Soul has solid roots in the classical Brazilian Samba with a sophisticated touch of Bossa Nova. The band features an impressive collection of musicians: Chip McNeil on saxophone, George Turner on guitar, Ricardo Flores on drums, Armand Beaudoin on bass, and the voice and charisma of the Brazilian vocalist, Vivian Felicio.

UFLive! concerts take place on the third Sunday of most months and are made possible by the generous support of The Urbana Free Library Foundation.

An Evening with Lauren Spieller

Meet author Lauren Spieller, whose debut novel, Your Destination is on the Left, came out earlier this year.

Her book is a fun, yet nuanced look at one teen girl's struggles to find her place and make difficult choices so that she can claim the life she wants. Dessa's family travels constantly and lives in their RV. Tired of that life, Dessa wants to pursue a career in art; but after not getting into any art schools and fearing her family will feel betrayed by her desire to settle down, she's not sure what to do anymore.

A book signing will follow her talk. Copies of her book will be available to purchase.

At Read at the Market, you can enjoy a story on the Magic Reading Carpet, and learn about programs, services, and what is new and exciting at the Library. You also can browse through a selection of books (and check one out) and pick up a free Read at the Market balloon.
