Ode to the Power of Poems!

cover of Out of This World by Amy Sklansky Pre-service teachers with Millikin University just completed their five-week course at the Library this week.  As a part of their final project, they chose a children’s book and extended it into content areas like science and fine arts and social emotional learning.  I love looking through the projects to see the connections students make to other books that would appeal to students.  This year some of the students used poetry to make that connection, enjoying books like Out of This World by Amy Sklansky, Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhhai Lai, and A Wreath for Emmett Till by Marily Nelson.  During the last night of class, I remind the students that Librarians are their “secret weapons” for their classrooms – we love helping teachers make connections between their classrooms and our materials.  One of the ways we do that is through our Teacher Holds service.  Through this service, we will select materials for a teacher and have them ready and waiting.  I’ll end today’s blog post with a drawing done by a young artist for Shel Silverstein’s “Boa Constrictor” poem – just the right size for a pocket.  –Elaine B.  child's illustration of Shel Silverstein's poem "Boa Constrictor"
