Requirements

Volunteers are expected to commit to a minimum of three-consecutive months of at least one hour of volunteer service each week. Each volunteer shift is no longer than three hours. Volunteers may not complete more than two volunteer shifts each week. 

Exceptions are made at the discretion of the Library staff or for volunteers recruited for special projects, gardening, and book sale support. Some volunteer opportunities require a longer commitment.

 

Volunteer Positions

Archives

Volunteers assist in indexing News-Gazette articles. This is primarily a data entry role.

Details:

  • One-two shifts per week, two-three hours per shift
  • Morning or afternoon availability
  • Total slots: 2
  • Requires additional interview process
  • Requires longer volunteer commitment

Computer Lab

Volunteers directly support patrons in this role. Typical tasks can include creating email accounts, searching for online resources, and online navigation assistance.

Details:

  • One-two shifts per week, two-three hours per shift
  • Morning or afternoon availability
  • Total slots: 13
  • Requires additional interview process
  • Requires longer volunteer commitment

Friends Book Sale Support

To help prepare for quarterly Friends Book Sales, volunteers set up tables and bring boxes in from storage at the direction of Friends members. This is a very physical task that results in 24-32 total volunteer hours.

Details:

  • Two-four-hour days, four times per year   
  • Scheduled times, typically evening
  • Total slots: 6

Gardening

The gardens surrounding the Library need daily attention. This task includes watering, weeding, and tending, plus special projects such as clearing and planting.

Details:

  • One shift per week, two hours per shift   
  • Any availability, April through November
  • Total slots: 7
  • Group project opportunity

Home Delivery Driver

Volunteers deliver materials to patrons in their homes each Wednesday morning. The driving route is consistent, and the patrons receiving deliveries may vary weekly. 

Details:

  • Driver’s license, vehicle, and proof of auto insurance are required
  • One shift per month, up to four hours per shift   
  • Wednesday morning availability
  • Total slots: 4
  • Requires additional interview process
  • Requires longer volunteer commitment

Home Delivery Item Selector

This task involves selecting items for patrons who receive items from the Library via home delivery. The volunteer uses the patron’s preferences and our online catalog system. The task is typically completed remotely.

Details:

  • Up to one hour per week
  • Typically remote, any availability 
  • Total slots: 10

Library Department Support

This task requires minimal training and has variety built into each volunteer shift. Supported departments include Children’s, Acquisitions, Graphics, Circulation, and donation management. Tasks include cleaning, program preparation, and materials management.

  • One shift per week, two hours per shift
  • Morning, afternoon, or evening availability
  • Total slots: 5

Material Finding

Working from a report generated daily, move about the Library pulling items requested by patrons to be held or requested for internal library needs. This task requires strong organization and reading skills. 

Details:

  • Reliable attendance and a longer commitment are required
  • One shift per week, two hours per shift
  • Morning availability required
  • Total slots: 14

Teen Open Lab

This opportunity is ideal for volunteers who love to work with and support youth in a completely teen-led environment. Because of the relationship-building potential inherent when working with youth, long-term volunteers will receive first consideration.

  • One shift per week
  • 3:00 - 5:30 p.m., Mondays - Thursdays
  • Total slots: 8
