Material Finding Volunteer
Working from a report generated daily, move about the Library pulling items requested by patrons to be held or requested for internal library needs. This task requires strong organization and reading skills. Reliable attendance and a longer commitment are required.

Library Department Support Volunteer
These volunteer tasks require minimal training and have variety built into each volunteer shift. Supported Departments include Childrens, Acquisitions, Graphics, Circulation, and Donation management. Tasks include cleaning, program preparation & materials management.

  • 1 shift/week; 2 hours per shift    
  • Morning, afternoon, or evening availability
  • 5 slots total                

Friends Online Sales
The Friends of The Urbana Free Library maintains online bookstores. Volunteers are trained to evaluate donated items, create sales listings, aid in maintaining inventory, and ship items to purchasers.

  • 1-2 shifts/week; 2-3 hours per shift
  • Morning, afternoon, or evening availability
  • 15 slots total    

Friends Book Sale Support Volunteer    
To help prepare for quarterly Friends Book Sales, volunteers set up tables and bring boxes in from storage at the direction of Friends members. This is a very physical task that results in 24-32 total volunteer hours.

  • 2 4-hour days, 4 times/year    
  • Scheduled times, typically evening    
  • 6 slots total

Home Delivery Item Selector Volunteer
This task involves selecting items for patrons who receive items from the library via home delivery. The volunteer uses the patron’s preferences and our online catalog system. The task is typically completed remotely.

  • up to 1 hour/week
  • Typically remote, any availability  
  • 10 slots total    

Gardening Volunteer
The gardens surrounding the Library need daily attention. This task includes watering, weeding, and tending, plus
special projects such as clearing and planting.

  • 1 shift/week; 2 hours per shift    
  • Any availability, April through November
  • 7 slots total, plus group projects

Home Delivery Driver Volunteer *
Volunteers deliver materials to patrons in their homes each Wednesday morning. The driving route is consistent, and the patrons receiving deliveries may vary weekly. Driver’s license, vehicle, and proof of auto insurance are required.

  • 1 shift/month; up to 4 hours per shift    
  • Wednesday morning availability
  • 4 slots total

Archives Volunteer *
Volunteers assist in indexing News Gazette articles.
This is primarily a data entry role.

  • 1-2 shifts/week; 2-3 hours per shift    
  • Morning or afternoon availability    
  • 2 slots total    

Computer Lab Volunteer *
Volunteers directly support patrons in this role. Typical
tasks can include creating email accounts, searching for
online resources, online navigation assistance.

  • 1-2 shifts/week; 2-3 hours per shift
  • Morning or afternoon availability
  • 13 total slots    

Teen Open Lab Volunteer *
This opportunity is ideal for volunteers who love to work
with & support youth in a completely teen-led environment. Because of the relationship-building potential inherent when working with youth, long-term volunteers will receive first consideration.

  • 1 shift/week; 3:00 - 5:30 p.m.       
  • Mondays - Thursdays; 3:00 - 5:30 p.m.
  • 8 total slots    

Volunteers are expected to commit to a minimum of 3 consecutive months of at least 1 hour of volunteer service each week. Each volunteer shift is no longer than 3 hours. Volunteers may not complete more than 2 volunteer shifts each week. Exceptions to the above are made at the discretion of the Volunteer Coordinator or for volunteers recruited for special projects, gardening, and book sale support. Some volunteer opportunities require a longer commitment.
