Established in 1956, The Champaign County Historical Archives is a department of The Urbana Free Library that maintains a research-level collection on the history and genealogy of Champaign County. In 1987 it was designated the official repository for non-current Champaign County records. Although it focuses on Champaign County, the Archives holds extensive collections of works dealing with the rest of Illinois and those states that document the significant migration routes of the communities that comprise Champaign County. Whether you have Champaign County ancestors (or no connections to the county at all), or you are interested in local history, there is a wealth of materials available for your research. Planning Your Visit
The Archives is open to the public and does not require an appointment. We do ask large groups to contact us in advance so that we may better prepare for your visit (K-12 students welcome!).
Donations to the Archives
To donate special collection materials documenting the history of Champaign County, please contact Anke Voss, Director of Archives at 217-367-4025 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Donations of books, photographs, postcards, family papers and organizational records, and monetary gifts are always welcome. Donations and bequests of materials are accepted by the Archives staff with the understanding that they are judged on the basis of the Archives Collection Management Policy. Materials that fall outside the scope of this policy are not added to the collection. We will work with you to determine the most appropriate disposition of the material and to conclude a gift agreement. Donations are tax-exempt. Donors are responsible for assigning a value to donated items.
