The Urbana Free Library has been ranked 2nd among all 600 Illinois public libraries and 21st among the some 3,000 American public libraries that serve populations over 10,000.
The rankings appeared in "Go Ahead, Name Them: America's Best Public Libraries," a library rating index published this January in American Libraries, the official journal of the American Library Association.
The index is based on a wide variety of statistical measures of use per citizen and of efficiency of operations.
Although the ranking was awarded to the Library, it's really an award to the entire community of Urbana, including.
- The citizens of Urbana, for heavy use and strong support of the Library.
- The Library Board of Trustees and Staff, for strong commitment to service to the community.
- The City of Urbana, for consistent financial support.
- The Friends of The Urbana Free Library.
- The Urbana Free Library Foundation.
- The Library's hundreds of volunteers.
- The many people whose financial contributions have strengthened the Library.
- The many local libraries, businesses, and agencies that have worked with our Library on cooperative projects.
Congratulations to all of Urbana!
