Internet

Wireless

Wireless Internet access is now available in key locations in the Adult Services and Champaign County Historical Archives of the library. The main areas are the two groups of reading tables on the north and south sides of the second floor. (We'd like to say that the range is amazing, but between the library's massive floors and the large amount of steel shelving, the best reception is near the antennas on the second floor.)

Our free wireless Internet access is provided through a joint project with CU Community Wireless Network. Visit the CU Community Wireless Network website for a list of other local hotspots in our community.

This wireless service is not on a secure network, so please exercise caution if doing sensitive work online.

In the summer of 2007 the Library will also be providing wireless access on the south terrace -- as well as benches to make access a more pleasant experience.

Computer Lab

The Urbana Free Library offers free high-speed Internet access as part of its mission to serve the educational and recreational needs of its patrons. By logging on, patrons automatically agree to abide by library internet policy; email and games are allowed; chat and IM are not allowed.

The Library also provides word processors with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.

Currently, the lab contains:

  • 6 non-Internet workstations (Microsoft Office products, library databases)
  • 2 express Internet workstations (limited Internet applications, short-term email/web access)
  • 19 full service Internet workstations (more Internet applications, library databases, Microsoft Office products)
  • 1 full service Internet workstation with large monitor and assistive technology equipment
  • 1 electric typewriter

The Library uses an automated system to allocate Internet time in an efficient manner for both library staff and users. This PC Reservation system is for convenience in scheduling. It does not keep track of sites visited.

To use the The Urbana Free Library Internet service, stop by the Adult Reference Desk on the second floor to obtain your User ID number. You will be asked to show your library card or a picture ID. Once you have your ID number the system is self-service.

The Adult Services librarians will help with your computer questions as time permits.

Computers providing access to the online catalog for our collection are available on all floors.

Charges for printing are 15ยข a page for black & white and $1.00 a page for color.
