Can I check out a NOOK® eReader from the library?

Yes, the library now has NOOK® eReaders! Any adult or high school student with a valid library card from The Urbana Free Library can check out one NOOK® for two weeks. 

Can someone help me learn how to use it?  I’ve never used an eReader before.

Sure.  Stop by one of our information desks and staff will be glad to help you learn how to use a NOOK®.  It’s easier than you might think!  You can also call us at 217-367-4405 if you have any problems.

Can I request a specific NOOK®?

Yes, The Urbana Free Library has NOOK®s loaded with different kinds of eBooks:  the Bestseller NOOK®the Romance & Women's Fiction | Urbana Lit  NOOK®,  the Science Fiction & Fantasy / Young Adult Literature NOOK®, the Literary Fiction / Mystery & Suspense NOOK®, the Battle of the Books NOOK®, and an interactive Children's Picture Books Color  NOOK®.  You can have two hold requests at a time and you are able to request any of the six kinds of NOOKs®

Can I load new titles on the NOOK®?  Can I check eBooks out to the NOOK®?

No, the library’s circulating NOOKs® come with pre-loaded titles.  You should never add or delete anything from the NOOK®(The library does have a free service called MyMediaMall that you can use with your own devices.  For more information, ask at Adult Services or Children's Services.)

Can I renew the NOOK®?

If no one has a hold on the NOOK®, you may renew it twice.

Can I return the NOOK® in the book drop?

No, you always need to return your NOOK® to library staff at the circulation desk.

What is the overdue charge for a NOOK®?

The late fee is $1.00 per day.

What if I lose or damage the NOOK®?

The following replacement costs apply: 

  • $125.00 for a lost/damaged NOOK®
  • $15.00 for a lost/damaged USB cord and adapter
  • $15.00 for the storage bag
  • Total:  $155.00
  • $245.00 for a lost/damaged Color NOOK®
  • $15.00 for a lost/damaged USB cord and adapter
  • $15.00 for the storage bag
  • $40.00 for the storage bag
  • Total:  $315.00
