Wringer
by Jerry Spinelli
This book is about a fictional city where there
is a festival every year, called pigeon day. On pigeon day about 5,000
pigeons are released into the sky and people try to shoot as many as they
can. Usually, when a bird gets shot, it doesn't die, but falls to the
ground. Once you're nine years old, you have to become something called, a
"wringer." The wringer's job is to run out to where a wounded pigeon is,
and wring its neck (twist it until it dies.) There is a boy named Palmer,
and he doesn't want to be a wringer. He wouldn't have the guts to kill an
innocent pigeon. But he knows he has to. He just keeps thinking to
himself, "I won't turn nine for ages. I don't have to worry about that
right now." But, of course, one day, his ninth birthday comes. Also, he
sees this pigeon on his windowsill and keeps it as a pet. He knows if
anyone found out he had it, they would take it and use it for pigeon day.
So, wringer is pretty much about Palmer getting in a pickle because of his
fear of becoming a wringer.
I like this book because... well, I
love way Jerry Spinelli writes, and I think the plot is interesting, and
moving.
Who do you think would like this book?: People like me, who love Jerry
Spinelli, or if you love animals, OR if you have a strange fear of wringing
the necks of pigeons, this book is for you.

Curlicues
by Valerie Worth
This book is about two pugs from a pet shop
who get sold to two very different old ladies. One is thin and strict, and
only bought the pug because of its use as a watchdog, and insists
feeds the pug only table scraps, and only her house-keeper likes him. The
other pug is sold to a plump old lady whoses pug means the world to her. She
feeds him elegant meals, until her cook rebels, and both households
are thrown into turmoil. The pugs are destined to meet.
I like this book because it shows that whether you spoil your dog or starve him, it is still mistreating
your dog. While the first pug almost starves and is kept out in the drafty
halls, the second pug is getting almost as fat as his owner. I think anyone who likes dogs would
enjoy this book.

Shiloh
byPhyllis Reynolds Naylor.
This book is about a boy named Marty Preston
who
feels that a young beagle is being mistreated by its owner Judd
Travers.
One day, Judd takes the dog for hunting and it escapes from the
pack
and
comes to Marty. From that day onwards, Marty names the dog Shiloh
and
keeps him secretly over the hills by his house. Meanwhile, everyone
in
the
town including Judd and Marty's parents start looking for the lost
dog.
Marty is able to keep this as a secret until a big German Shepherd
attacks
Shiloh. Marty and his father take the wounded Shiloh to the Vet.
Judd
learns from the Vet that Marty has his dog and asks him to return
the
dog
as soon as it becomes well. When Marty goes to Judd's house to
tell him
that he will not give the dog back, he happens to see Judd shoot
a doe
when it was not the hunting season. When Marty threatens Judd that
he
is
going to report this to the game warden, Judd tells him that if
he can
pay
the money right away, he can have the dog! Since Marty cannot
pay the money right away, he agrees to work in
Judd's
yard for a few weeks.
Though Judd makes him work harder and harder, Marty completes all
