Jewish Heritage Video Collection

The Urbana Free Library is the recipient of an impressive array of films, the Jewish Heritage Video Collection, which explores Jewish culture and history through film. This collection has been provided locally through the generosity of the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation, the Charles H. Revson Foundation, and local donors Michael and Lia Faiman.

The JHVC video library contains nearly 200 film and television programs, including feature films, children's programs, foreign films, Yiddish classics, and documentaries. Titles range from the popular children's series Shalom Sesame and a wonderful profile of Isaac Bashevis Singer in Isaac in America to Fiddler on the Roof and Steven Spielberg's acclaimed Schindler's List.

To further the educational potential of these films, the JHVC has also developed a series of course guides and curricular materials based on videos in the collection. With these materials, group viewing and discussion can easily be incorporated into film, religion, history, and culture classes.

Among the course topics are American Jewish Comedy, Elie Wiesel's Great Figures of the Bible, Growing-Up Stories/, Perspectives on the Holocaust, The Jewish Image in American Film, Visions of Israel: Israeli Filmmakers and Images of the Jewish State, and Yiddish Culture.

An annotated printed catalog for the collection is available at the Adult Reference Desk. The films can also be located through the Library's online catalog by individual titles, subjects, or the series Jewish Heritage Video Collection.

All titles in the Jewish Heritage Video Collection, including feature films, circulate according to the Library's policies for educational videos. They have a loan period of one week, with one renewal, and the videos available for interlibrary loan. Feature films in the Adult Department can be found in the educational video section at 791.43, the classification number for movies.

Our thanks to the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation for this important contribution.

"We donated the Jewish Heritage Video Collection to The Urbana Free Library because, of the libraries we considered, it offered the best combination of professional oversight and maximum access to users."
