Each year, the Friends hold massive sales of great used books in April, August, and November. You can also browse a selection of gently used books year-round at The Urbana Free Library Cafe and Friends Book Shop. Proceeds from book sales and the book shop support the purchase of library materials and library programs.

…Reminder About the Summer Book Sale

The August 22-26 book sale will include some of the library’s collection items from the Better World Books shipment. Adult Services librarians are in the process of carefully re-evaluating the titles and selecting items to return to the collection. Remaining items will go to the Friends for their book sales.

Don’t miss this opportunity to support the Friends of the Urbana Free Library. All items not purchased at the summer book sale will be transferred to the Recycle Center at the University of Illinois.

In August, our book club for adults will discuss Wonderland Creek by Christy Award-winner, Lynn N. Austin. The novel is based on the real-life experiences of the packhorse librarians, subsidized during the Great Depression to deliver books to the residents and schoolhouses of rural Kentucky. With a satisfying blend of quirkiness, American history, feuds, romance, and personal growth, Wonderland Creek is a must-read for anyone who loves libraries and reading.

UFL Reads! meets the fourth Sunday of most months.

Getting Ready for Self Checkout

What’s New?

You may have noticed that new DVDs in our Adult and Children’s Services collection have a different look. We’re keeping the original cases and are adding new security tags so the DVDs will be shelf-ready when we introduce self checkout stations.

What’s Coming?

As we transition to the option for self checkout for library users, you may find library staff working diligently in the stacks affixing tags to the book collection, prepping them for use with self checkout stations. We anticipate completing the tagging of the Children’s Services collection on the ground floor the week of July 14, and will subsequently move on to tag the Adult Services collection on the first and second floors.

Once the self checkout stations are ordered and they arrive, they will need to be installed, tested, and tweaked. We anticipate the timeline for the introduction of self checkout sometime in the fall.

If you have a question, feel free to contact administration@tufl.info or watch for updates on the “Getting Ready for Self Checkout” page at urbanafreelibrary.org.

There’s So Much Going on @ Your Library —
Don’t Miss a Thing!

Sign up for The UFL’s E-notification of Events service and receive a friendly email reminder for library events that may be of interest to you, including when the new edition of the online newsletter is available.

To sign up, visit urbanafreelibrary.org and select “full calendar” at the bottom of the “Calendar of Events” box. You’ll find a link to sign up and select which programs and community meetings interest you.

Wide Open Spaces!

Have you noticed more wide open spaces in Children’s Services on the ground floor? With some careful consolidation and rearrangement of shelving, some much welcome elbow room was created.

“This is so convenient! Thank you for making it easier to work on my laptop, while also watching my child play.”

We’re On Flickr!

Thanks to the Champaign County Historical Archives, the library can now be found on FlickrTM, the popular online community for photo sharing. The Urbana Free Library Digital Collections was introduced on Tuesday, July 16 with 58 photos, but check back often. We expect the collection to grow rapidly as staff add historical and current images of the community and library events.

To find us on FlickrTM, go to urbanafreelibrary.org, and click on the FlickrTM site icon in the upper-right corner or Google us at Urbana Free Library Digital Collections.
