This weekend brought to you by the letter “B”

child looking through microscope at bat and mice embryosWhat a weekend it has been!  Local book author Patricia Hruby Powell last night, All Score Urbana with four bassoons (plus a harp, a guitar and bubble wrap) this morning, a big book bash at Read Across America, and an afternoon filled with – bats!  Compliments of researchers from the Sears Lab at UIUC, audience members had a chance to test their knowledge about bats – Did you know there are 1300 species of bats in the world?  And that 1 out of every 4 mammals is a bat? – and then view bat and mice embryos under the microscope.  Another table allowed families to touch and hold actual bat skeletons.  No live bats today, but this research group will be at Allerton Park sometime this summer, with live bats.  Stay tuned and we’ll let you know when it is.  In the meantime, try some of our bat books, or even check out a microscope from our 3D Science collection.  –Elaine B.
