Just out of high school with the full summer ahead, Roomies by Zarr and Altebrando introduces two strangers by an automatic roommate assignment email. Elizabeth, from the East Coast, is paired with Lauren, from the West Coast, to share a dorm room when college begins at the end of the summer.
As the summer months creep by, the two girls exchange emails to sort out roommate details. Who will bring the microwave or mini-fridge? A TV? Starting with the basics and branching out into the more personal details of their lives, the girls continue to email each other as they experience the complexities of preparing to move away from home.
It’s a time of new experiences, new beginnings, new opportunities, and new friends, and figuring out how to fit old friendships and budding relationships in with all that newness.
Roomies reminded me of all the excitement, anticipation, nervousness, and adventurousness that go along with growing up and leaving the nest. So whether you are looking ahead to the years beyond high school, or looking back to take a stroll down memory lane, consider reading Roomies by Sara Zarr and Tara Altebrando.
