56 up

In 1964, director Michael Apted interviewed a group of British 7-year-olds, in the first of what has become a long-term television commitment. Every 7 years Apted has revisited those who still wished to participate. The most recent episode, 56 Up, was released in 2013. It’s fascinating to see how lives and expectations have changed over the years as the subjects grow into middle age. But is the series true social commentary or a snapshot of lives as edited by the director? Urbana Free owns the complete series, for those who want ponder the whole story.

The World before her

This second new documentary contrasts stories of young women in India. The film’s website states

"Through dramatic verite action and unprecedented behind-the-scenes access, The World Before Her sweeps back the curtain to reveal the intimate stories of young women determined to win the [Miss India Pageant] crown and the forces that oppose them. Hindu fundamentalists view pageants and their “international” beauty standards as immoral and a symbol of the rapid Westernization of India; protests are common.”
