Local artist Kevin Hamilton will present on the research and process behind A Place in Time, a comic book he produced with support of an Urbana Public Arts grant. The book relates a history of Urbana as the setting for a singular evening in 1968, when a national television broadcast originated at the University of Illinois. There, before a large audience, local activist John Lee Johnson helped turn a “town hall” style meeting about campus political unrest to a critical examination of local race relations in Champaign and Urbana. Hamilton’s comic tells this story and others, such as that of influential engineering professor Heinz von Foerster, who was also present for the broadcast, and a vocal participant.
Hamilton’s talk will include excerpts of this long-lost broadcast, and some time for discussion about the potential of comics for telling such stories.
