The Champaign County Historical Society
The Archives works closely with the Champaign County Historical Society. The quality of the archives collection is due in large part to the generous donations of books, family materials, and volunteer time by members of the county historical and geneaological societies and other individuals.
Historical Sketch
A group interested in the formation of a historical society gathered in The Urbana Free Library on September 15, 1958, at the invitation of the Public Affairs Committee of Altrusa. In a second meeting on October 20, 1958, a constitution and bylaws, prepared by Chancy L. Finfrock, were adopted. A board of governors was chosen, and they in turn elected the following officers: Mr. Karl B. Lohmann, President, Mr. Olin L. Browder, Vice-President; Mrs. Eva Thayer Shively, Secretary-Treasurer. The first program meeting of the Society was held November 24, 1958 in the auditorium of The Urbana Free Library.
